Karin Forno received her Bachelor of Science in Medical Microbiology from Stanford University and went on to complete her M.D. at The Medical College of Pennsylvania (now known as Drexel University School of Medicine) in 1985. She did her family practice residency at Contra Costa County Health Services in Martinez, CA. After 3 years as a faculty physician at the residency program in Contra Costa County, she moved to Modesto, CA to join a private family practice group in 1991.

In 1999 she decided she wanted to return to an old passion of hers, English, and she returned to school, earning an M.A. in English Literature at California State University Stanislaus and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing at California State University Chico. During this time she worked as an urgent care physician for Stanislaus County Health Services Agency and taught residents at the Family Practice program in Stanislaus County. She continued working for the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency in Urgent Care, at a Family Practice Clinic, and teaching residents part time while teaching English at CSU Stanislaus part time until she decided to relocate to the Monterey area in 2011.
